Projects in Progress
Physical Infrastructure - Network Switches - Wireless - CATV/Video System - Layer I DocumentationPhysical Infrastructure (Layer 1) Projects
- The Need: The increased demand for high-speed networking on campus creates the need to inter-link all MDF’s with high fiber count, redundant fiber routes.
- Scope: Installation of large count fiber optic cables between all MDF’s in a ring topology.
- Status (July 08): All cables have been installed. Two remaining components of the project are the extension of the cables in the Hillsborough Building from the basement up to the MDF (in progress) and reconfiguring of fiber circuits across campus (in progress).
- The Need: Campus MDF’s have a variety of undocumented power systems. Many of those have capacity and safety related problems.
- Scope: Have an outside consultant complete a study of the MDF’s and make recommendations for needed improvements/additions to the power systems implement those improvements as funds are available.
- Status (July 08):The Study is complete. Design for phase I (critical and high priority items) has begun.
- The Need: The 400+ BDF’s and IDF’s on campus have suffered under many years of deferred maintenance and multiple building renovations. Many were constructed over 10 years ago and are in need of general upgrades (cooling, lighting, cleanup, etc.).
- Scope: Develop a program to address both maintenance issues and room deficiency problems in a systematic fashion.
- Status (July 08): An Adopt-An-IDF program was initiated in Fall 2006 to handle routine maintenance for these rooms is ongoing. The BDF/IDF upgrade project is a multi-year, ongoing project to correct room deficiency problems. Work in Winston/Caldwell/Tompkins is in progress. Designs are in progress for CVM main, Patterson, and Talley.
- The Need: All 400+ BDF's and IDF's require modern uninterruptible power supplies (UPS's) to protect vital equipment from power surges, etc. Some BDF's and IDF's have no UPS. Others have older models which are no longer supportable.
- Scope: Install UPS's in the IDF's without them that do not have planned upgrades. Install UPS's in IDF's with older model UPS's.
- Status (July 08): Installation of UPS in the IDF's without them is in progress. The upgrade of older UPS's is contigent upon available funding.
- The Need: Of the 180+ campus buildings that are fiber connected to the campus backbone, only a handfull have pre-CAT 5 cable based infrastructure. These buildings need upgrades to bring them upto the campus standard. The substardard infrastructure represents only about 1% of campus.
- Scope: Design and install infrastructure for five major buildings that are deficient. These are: Motor Pool, Witherspoon, Bureau of Mines (partial), Univ. Bookstore, and West Dunn Bldg.
- Status (July 08): Partial funding is approved. Some of the above projects should be completed during FY 08/09.
