Network Switches (Layer 2) Projects

    1. 08/09 New Buildings/Renovations

    • The Need: NC State is in the midst of a number of new building construction and major renovation projects. Network switches are needed for each building as it is occupied.
    • Scope: In 08/09, some of the major buildings that will come on line are: Math and Statistics Building, Park Shops, Thompson Theater, Terry Animal Hospital and The Point (Chancellor's Residence).
    • Status (July 08): Designs will be completed and switches ordered as each project nears completion.

Wireless Projects

    1. Wireless Nomad Project - 08/09

    • The Need: In order to extend the reach of the campus data network for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors, installation of well-designed wireless LAN infrastructure is needed. An effort is underway to install wireless networks all over campus in a systematic fashion. For more details on the design process see http://comtech.ncsu.edu/wireless/design_status.php.
    • Scope: The campus is divided into 100+ mini-zones for design purposes. The Infrastructure Subcommittee of the University IT Committee determines design priorities. Current designs planned for 08/09 include: Harris/Pullen, Scott, 1911 Building, Visitor Center, Ricks, and Schaub. Others will probably be added to the list.
    • Status (July 08): Design is in progress for Harris/Pullen and Scott.
