VPN Client Installation Using Install Shield for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP

Instructions

We recommend to use this version of the Cisco VPN client installer on the following Operating Systems:

  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98
  • Windows ME
  • Windows NT with SP6
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
If you are running Windows NT or 2000 verify that Ipsec is turned on (XP has everything set up to work by default). Go to Network and Dial-up Connections/Properties. Highlight Internet Protocol and select Properties/Advanced and select the Options tab. Highlight IP security and click on Properties. Make sure Client(Respond Only) is selected under the Use this IP security Policy:
  1. Download the appropriate Client file to your desktop
  2. Locate the downloaded file named vpnclient-win-XYZ-k9.exe (XYZ depends on latest version available).
  3. Double click on the downloaded file to start the installation. WinZIP self extractor will start and prompt you for the directory you would like to unzip to. Change this directory to C:\ciscovpn or other temporary directory

  4. Networking

  5. Click on Unzip to extract the installation files. You should see 10 files unzipped.

  6. Networking

  7. Click OK to close the window named WinZip Self-Extractor acknowledging that files have been successfully unzipped
  8. Click Close on the WinZip Self-Extractor window
  9. Before you start the installation process close all Antivirus and Personal Firewall software such as Norton Antivirus, ZoneAlarm, Blackice, etc.
  10. Browse to the directory you have unzipped these files to and double click on the file named Setup.exe

  11. Networking

  12. Click on Next on the Installation Wizard screen

  14. Read the License Agreement and select "I accept the license agreement" and click Next

  16. Leave the default destination folder as is C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\ and click on Next

  18. Click on Next again to acknowledge the installation settings and start the installation process

  20. During the installation process it is normal to see a few windows pop-up
  21. If a Hardware Installation window pops up, click on Continue Anyway

  23. Select "Yes, I want to restart my computer now"a and click on Finish when the VPN has been successfully installed

  25. Once rebooted, go to Start, Programs, Cisco Systems VPN Client and select VPN Client

  27. Click on the NEW button for new Connection Entry
  28. Fill in the fields as shown here

  29. Networking

  30. Enter 152.1.1.14 to the Host field (This is the public IP address of the VPN server)
  31. Enter NCSU to Name field (all Caps)
  32. Enter NCSU to Password and Confirm Password field (all Caps)
  33. Click SAVE

  34. Networking

  35. Select the NCSU VPN entry you have just created and Click CONNECT. You will see connection information scrolling across the bottom of your screen initiating the connection

  36. Networking

  37. Enter your Unity ID and password
  38. Click OK

  39. Networking

  40. You are now conneted through a VPN tunnel and you should see a pad lock in the lower right corner of your screen
