Cable Television for Students

General Information
- You must provide your own television and cable used to connect from the wall to the television.
- A limited number of converter boxes are available for televisions that are not cable ready. The cost for rental is $10/semester and the converter box must be returned at the conclusion of the academic year. Failure to return the converter box (including all of its parts) will result in a $50 charge being placed on your account.

Cable Television Help
I'm not getting reception?
No Reception?
- Have you signed up for cable service? Certain situations require students to sign up for services at the beginning of each semester/session. If that is the case, sign up for service at comtech.ncsu.edu/students. This process takes 1-3 business days to complete.
- Check the wire connecting the television to cable jack. Is it loose? Is it securely connected at both ends?
- Borrow a wire from a friend's room. See if that wire works. If it does work with the new wire you know that you need to replace your wire.
- If you have tried everything else call (919) 515 7099, option 1, when you are by your television, to troubleshoot. Student and Media Services is open 8AM-8PM Monday - Thursday; 8AM-5PM Friday. You may also email Student and Media Services at: student_telecommunications@ncsu.edu. Please make sure that you include your residence hall, room number, phone number and name. Be very specific in describing the problem and what you have done to try to fix it. Note that the best and quickest method of contact is via telephone.
I'm only getting certain channels?
Missing Channels?
- The most common solution to this problem is to make sure that you have your television programmed for cable and not aerial antenna. Most televisions have a setup menu that can be accessed through remote control. Make sure that your antenna choice reads CABLE. After you do this auto program your channels and the rest of the channels should be able to be viewed correctly.
- If you are running the cable wire through an external unit such as a gaming console, DVD or VCR player, try running the wire directly into the back of the television to see if it makes a difference. If it does you will need to change a setting on your external console. Most DVD/VCR systems have a setup menu that can be accessed with the unit's remote control.
- If you have an older television that needs a converter box to receive cable make sure that all of the wires are firmly secured. You may even want to try to use another converter box to see if that is where the problem is. Converter boxes can be rented from Student and Media Services in the West Dunn Building.
