Digital Television Conversion
What happened?
You may have heard about an important switch that took place in June. On June 12, 2009, over-the-air television stations began broadcasting solely via digital transmission. What does that mean? If you have NC State's cable television package, absolutely nothing. If you don't have cable television in your room, you need to have a television that is able to receive a digital signal over-the-air. If your TV is not digital signal-ready, you will not be able to receive television programming.
Why Digital?
There are several reasons behind the digital television conversion
- Much clearer picture quality
- Less power to broadcast the signal
- The conversion will allow the government to auction off part of the analog spectrum
How do I Get Television my Favorite Television Stations?
The easiest way for you to make sure that you are able to receive your favorite television stations is to subscribe to NC State's cable package. This change only affects over-the-air signals, not cable TV signals. You should not see any change of the quality of your cable television signal.
If you don't want cable TV, and you have an older television, you will need to get a digital converter box to convert the digital signal. You can see what channels are currently available as part of the NC State cable line up by clicking here.
