Will ComTech install 802.11a hotspots in locations other than classrooms/instructional areas?

  • No.

Are 802.11a (classroom) hotspots included in the "Buy one, get one free" program?

Will ComTech installed 802.11a hotspots automatically have the 802.11g radio activated?

  • By default, ComTech will turn on the "G" radio as long as there are not 3 other APs in the building. The customer can request to have the "G" radio turned off.

What is Guest Wireless?

  • ComTech provides wireless coverage across campus for the faculty, staff and students of NC State. A Unity ID is required to access the unrestricted wireless network. However there has been an increased demand for guest wireless access by visitors, recruiters, and alumni. To meet this demand ComTech provides a separate wireless network for guests.

How is guest Wireless different from the wireless available to faculty, staff and students?

  • Guest Wireless is provided to visitors and guests of NC State as a courtesy. As such, the access is limited to Web traffic(HTTP and HTTPS) and commonly used VPN(Virtual Private Network) applications.

Where is Guest Wireless available?

  • Guest wireless is enabled on all APs in the NOMAD network. Guest wireless coverage is available wherever NOMAD wireless is available (please look at the maps for coverage information).

How do I log in?

  • You must change your SSID to ncsu-guest. Upon opening your Web browser you will be redirected to the Guest wireless access Web page. You must click "Agree to the Terms of the NC State Computer Use Regulation" before you will be allowed access.

How do I connect to my company's VPN using Guest Wireless?

  • Guests must use their own VPN software to connect to an external VPN. NC State does not provide guest access to the campus VPN service.

What if I have problems connecting to my VPN?

  • Most commonly used VPN clients will work on our Guest Wireless network. However, if your particular VPN uses non-standard ports, you may have trouble connecting. Pleae contact the NC State Helpdesk to troubleshoot conectivity issues.
